Don’t hit the panic button yet! There are a few things that you need to know before you start changing your plans to take the ‘revised’ GRE. Firstly, these are just cosmetic changes and the new questions will not be marked!!
Two new question types have been introduced; one each for the verbal and quantitative sections. In the verbal section ‘text completions’ have been introduced and in the quantitative section ‘Numeric Entry’ has been introduced. Test takers will get either one of these in their tests. There will also be just one new question. GRE says (pass the salt) that these questions are functioning as intended and (more salt please) that they will be scored as soon as an ‘adequate sample of data from the operational testing environment’ is available.
Those who were cringing at the thought of ‘Advanced Reasoning’ being introduced have reason to smile. There is no news as of yet about when the second phase changes will be instituted. Well, given ETS’ track record with changes in the TOEFL and the way they shied from introducing the NGRE in April, I, for one, will not be too worried.
